German Red Army Faction, student protests, Baader Meinhof - A media perspective Meinhof Meinhof

She was accused by Röhl and subsequently described by the media as the organizer of the vandalism. It was difficult to prove, as she was not there when it happened.

Meinhof had been approached by Ensslin, girlfriend of jailed arsonist Baader, for her help in securing the release of Baader from police custody.

A scheme was developed where Meinhof would approach leftist publisher Klaus Wagenbach, seeking to have him hire Meinhof and the imprisoned Baader in writing a book.

After securing a contract from Wagenbach who was not aware of Meinhof's ulterior motives , Meinhof petitioned authorities to allow Baader to travel from Moabit Prison to an institute for social research in the Dahlem district of Berlin.

The plan was for armed guerrillas to enter the institute and secure the release of Baader; it was intended that no shooting was to take place.

Meinhof was to stay behind, and have a plausibly deniable explanation that she was not involved in the planning of Baader's escape.

Baader arrived with two guards, and set to work with Meinhof in the institute's library. Two women compatriots of Ensslin's, along with a man with a criminal record hired because of his supposed experience with armed encounters broke into the institute.

The man shot the elderly librarian Georg Linke, severely wounding him in his liver. It was later claimed that the man was holding two weapons, a pistol and a gas canister gun, and accidentally fired the wrong weapon in the confusion.

Because of the shooting of the librarian, it is speculated [ by whom? Within days wanted posters appeared throughout Berlin offered a 10, DM reward for her capture for attempted murder.

In the beginning, Meinhof meant to stay behind to use her power as an influential reporter to help the rest outside, but in the panic after the shooting she joined the others jumping out of the institute's window.

Immediately after their escape Meinhof called a friend to pick up her children from school. This call helped illustrate her overall lack of planning.

In the next two years Meinhof participated in the various bank robberies and bombings perpetrated by the group. She and other RAF members attempted to kidnap her children so that they could be sent to a camp for Palestinian orphans and educated there according to her desires; however, the twins were intercepted in Sicily and returned to their father, in part due to the intervention of Stefan Aust.

During this period, Meinhof wrote or recorded many of the manifestos and tracts for the RAF. The most significant of these is probably The Concept of the Urban Guerrilla , a response to an essay by Horst Mahler , that attempts to set out more correctly their prevailing ideology.

It also included the first use of the name Rote Armee Fraktion and, in the publications of it, the first use of the RAF insignia. Gudrun Ensslin is often considered to have been the effective female co-leader of the group rather than Meinhof.

Meinhof wrote an essay defending the Munich massacre , which historian Jeffrey Herf describes as "one of the most important documents in the history of antisemitism in Europe after the Holocaust".

On 14 June , in Langenhagen , Fritz Rodewald, a teacher who had been providing accommodation to deserters from the U.

Armed Forces , was approached by a stranger asking for an overnighting house the next day for herself and a friend.

He agreed but later became suspicious that the woman might be involved with the RAF and eventually decided to call the police.

The next day the pair arrived at Rodewald's dwelling while the police watched. The man was followed to a nearby telephone box and was found to be Gerhard Müller who was armed.

After arresting Müller, the police then proceeded to arrest the woman — Meinhof. In December , Meinhof, who was awaiting trial, was called to testify at Horst Mahler 's trial where Mahler questioned her about the statement of support the two had issued for the massacre at the Summer Olympics in Munich.

His questioning led her to say:. How was Auschwitz possible, what was anti-Semitism? It used the hatred of the people of their dependence on money as a medium of exchange, their longing for communism.

Auschwitz means that six million Jews were murdered and carted on to the rubbish dumps of Europe for being that which was maintained of them — Money-Jews.

What had happened was that finance capital and banks, the hard core of the system of imperialism and capitalism, had diverted the people's hatred of money and exploitation away from themselves and on to the Jews.

After two years of preliminary hearings, Meinhof was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment on 29 November Eventually Meinhof, Baader, Ensslin, and Jan-Carl Raspe were jointly charged on 19 August , with four counts of murder , fifty-four of attempted murder, and a single count of forming a criminal association.

However, before the trial was concluded, Meinhof was found hanged by a rope, fashioned from a towel, in her cell in the Stammheim Prison , Stuttgart, on 9 May It is highly probable that, if not for her death, she would have been sentenced to 'life imprisonment plus 15 years'.

The remaining three defendants received such a sentence, [13] designed to minimize the possibility of early parole. The official verdict was Meinhof had committed suicide.

It was later discovered she had become increasingly isolated from other RAF prisoners. Notes exchanged between them in prison included one by Ensslin, describing her as "too weak".

The official findings were not accepted by many in the RAF [14] and other militant organisations, and there are still some who doubt their accuracy and believe that she was murdered by the authorities.

A second investigation was carried out by an international group. The findings of the inquiry were published under the title Der Tod Ulrike Meinhofs.

Report of the International Investigation Committee in Meinhof's body was buried six days after her death, in Berlin- Mariendorf.

Her funeral turned out to be a demonstration of about 7, people. Demonstrations took place across the country, social and political prisoners in Berlin and Hessen held a three-day hunger strike.

Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir in an open letter compared her death to the worst crimes of Nazi era. In late , following investigations by her daughter Bettina, it was discovered that Meinhof's brain had been retained apparently without permission following the autopsy performed as part of the investigation into Meinhof's death.

The original autopsy had found brain injury near the amygdala , resulting from successful surgery in to remove a benign cyst.

The unpublished autopsy results at the time stated that the brain injuries "justified questions as to the culpability" of Meinhof. Bernhard Bogerts, a psychiatrist at Magdeburg university, later re-examined the brain and also doubted that Meinhof was fully criminally responsible.

Meinhof's last appearance in court was on 4 May when the defendants requested to provide evidence about the participation of West Germany in the Vietnam War, claiming that this was the cause of their radicalization, and making the novel request to be granted the status of prisoners of war see above.

According to Jutta Ditfurth , the last days before Meinhof's death went smoothly. The prisoners including Meinhof spent their meeting time 30 minutes, twice per day discussing various philosophers and political issues.

One of the guards noted that they were laughing. According to Meinhof's sister, Wienke Zitzlaff, during her last visit in prison, Meinhof had told her: "You can stand up and fight only while you are alive.

If they say I committed suicide, be sure that it was a murder. They were hopeful about the possibilities that the new strategy seemed to offer.

They also discussed whether Meinhof could testify as witness in the International Law Conference in Geneva where a delegation of lawyers planned to denounce the measure of detention in solitary confinement.

Finally, Meinhof was planning to reveal main witness Gerhard Müller's role in trial. During the press conference called by defense attorneys, one of Meinhof's lawyers, Michael Oberwinder, stated that it was less than a week before Meinhof's death that they had a very involved conversation.

He claimed that there was not the least sign of depression or lack of interest on her part, and that it was an animated discussion in the context of which Meinhof explained the group's point of view.

Meinhof's last visitor was Giovanni Capelli, lawyer of the Red Brigades. He conveyed the desire of the Red Brigades to contact her and described the conditions of detention in Italy where prisoners were not held in isolation except Renato Curcio and were politically active.

They also discussed the establishment of an international committee of lawyers to defend the RAF. Capelli later said that Meinhof gave him the impression of "a vivid, lifelike woman", "open to all questions".

They arranged to meet again soon. According to Ditfurth the hasty press releases that followed Meinhof's death, were similar to those of April , when it was incorrectly broadcast that Meinhof had committed suicide.

The following days the newspapers reported in detail what supposed to be Meinhof's thoughts, like: "she realised her mistake," [23] "she had become aware of the futility," [24] and that she "resigned to death".

There was a concern of Meinhof supporters about the forensic surgeons chosen by the state to perform the autopsy. In , he made without approval and kept for a long time the death masks of Baader, Ensslin and Raspe.

On 11 May, a second autopsy was performed on demand of Wienke Zitzlaff by Dr. Werner Janssen and Dr. Jürgen Schröder, even though the brain, a lot of critical organs, and tissue parts had been previously removed from the body.

Also her nails had been cut, so the doctors could not determine clearly if there were traces of struggle. Some examinations could not take place since critical time had passed.

Janssen concluded that the most probable cause of death was "suicide by hanging", however in order to come to a definite conclusion he insisted to be given access to the report of the first autopsy, something that never happened.

Finally on demand of Meinhof's attorney Klaus Croissant and the International Committee for Political Prisoners, an international investigation commission was created in order to examine the conditions surrounding Meinhof's death.

Once more the German authorities refused to give the complete first autopsy report to the commission, hindering their investigation.

They demanded the release of several imprisoned members of the Baader-Meinhof gang. The government refused the request, which led to the execution of two of the hostages.

A few of the bombs that were intended to blow up the embassy prematurely detonated, which resulted in the death of two of the six Baader-Meinhof affiliates.

The other four members eventually surrendered to the authorities. In May , several British intelligence reports circulated that stated that the Baader-Meinhof gang had stolen mustard gas from a joint U.

The reports also indicated that the Baader-Meinhof gang had intended to use the stolen gas in German cities.

It eventually turned out that the mustard gas canisters were merely misplaced; however, the Baader-Meinhof gang still successfully capitalized on the news by frightening several different agencies.

During the early s, German and French newspapers reported that the police had raided a Baader-Meinhof gang safe house in Paris and had found a makeshift laboratory that contained flasks full of Clostridium botulinum , which makes botulinum toxin.

These reports were later found to be incorrect; no such lab was ever found. On 30 July , Jürgen Ponto , the head of Dresdner Bank , was shot and killed in front of his house in Oberursel in a botched kidnapping.

Following the convictions, Hanns Martin Schleyer , a former officer of the SS who was then President of the German Employers' Association and thus one of the most powerful industrialists in West Germany was abducted in a violent kidnapping.

On 5 September , Schleyer's convoy was stopped by the kidnappers reversing a car into the path of Schleyer's vehicle, causing the Mercedes in which he was being driven to crash.

Once the convoy was stopped, five masked assailants immediately shot and killed three policemen and the driver and took Schleyer hostage.

One of the group Sieglinde Hofmann produced her weapon from a pram she was pushing down the road. A letter was then received by the federal government, demanding the release of eleven detainees, including those in Stammheim.

A crisis committee was formed in Bonn , headed by Chancellor Helmut Schmidt , which, instead of acceding, resolved to employ delaying tactics to give the police time to discover Schleyer's location.

At the same time, a total communication ban was imposed on the prison inmates, who were now allowed visits only from government officials and the prison chaplain.

The crisis dragged on for more than a month, while the Bundeskriminalamt carried out its biggest investigation to date. The leader introduced himself to the passengers as "Captain Mahmud" who would be later identified as Zohair Youssef Akache.

The Bonn crisis team again decided not to give in. The plane flew on via Larnaca , then Dubai , and then to Aden , where flight captain Jürgen Schumann, whom the hijackers deemed not cooperative enough, was brought before an improvised "revolutionary tribunal" and executed on 16 October.

His body was dumped on the runway. The aircraft again took off, flown by the co-pilot Jürgen Vietor, this time headed for Mogadishu , Somalia.

A high-risk rescue operation was led by Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski , then undersecretary in the chancellor's office, who had been secretly flown in from Bonn.

All four hijackers were shot; three of them died on the spot. None of the passengers were seriously hurt and Wischnewski was able to phone Schmidt and tell the Bonn crisis team that the operation had been a success.

After the successful conclusion of the Landshut hostage crisis was announced in the late evening of 17 October, all the RAF members incarcerated in Stammheim committed suicide during the following night.

Their lawyer, Arndt Müller, had smuggled pistols into the prison. Irmgard Möller tried to kill herself with a knife, but survived severely injured.

The suicides went unnoticed until early next morning. Doctors were rushed in. Baader and Ensslin were already dead when found. Raspe was still alive and moved to the hospital where he died soon after.

Möller recovered after being brought to a hospital. The suicide of the imprisoned RAF leadership led to a significant media echo.

The coordinated attempt sparked numerous conspiracy theories. These theories were spread by RAF supporters and sympathizers; some of them even taken up by the mainstream press.

Available evidence shows that these suicides were planned and prepared for a long time by the RAF members. On the very same day, Hanns-Martin Schleyer was shot to death by his captors en route to Mulhouse , France.

On 19 October, Schleyer's kidnappers announced that he had been "executed" and pinpointed his location. After 43 days we have ended Hanns-Martin Schleyer's pitiful and corrupt existence His death is meaningless to our pain and our rage The struggle has only begun.

Freedom through armed, anti-imperialist struggle. The dissolution of the Soviet Union in late December was a serious blow to Leninist groups, but well into the s attacks were still being committed under the name RAF.

On 30 November , Deutsche Bank chairman Alfred Herrhausen was killed with a highly complex bomb when his car triggered a photo sensor in Bad Homburg.

On 1 April , Detlev Karsten Rohwedder , leader of the government Treuhand organization responsible for the privatization of the East German state economy, was shot and killed.

The assassins of Zimmermann, von Braunmühl, Herrhausen, and Rohwedder were never reliably identified. After German reunification in , it was confirmed that the RAF had received financial and logistic support from the Stasi , the security and intelligence organization of East Germany , which had given several members who had chosen to leave the group shelter and new identities.

This was already generally suspected at the time. Brigitte Mohnhaupt , Peter Boock, Rolf Wagner, and Sieglinde Hoffmann spent most of the year in SB facilities in Mazury district, where they were also going through series of training programs along with others from Arab countries.

To weaken the organization further the government declared that some RAF inmates would be released if the RAF refrained from violent attacks in the future.

Subsequently, the RAF announced their intention to "de-escalate" and refrain from significant activity. The last action taken by the RAF took place in with a bombing of a newly built prison in Weiterstadt by overcoming the officers on duty and planting explosives.

Although no one was seriously injured, this operation caused property damage amounting to million Deutschmarks over 50 million euros.

The last big action against the RAF took place on 27 June Due to a number of operational mistakes involving the various police services, German Minister of the Interior Rudolf Seiters took responsibility and resigned from his post.

On 20 April , an eight-page typewritten letter in German was faxed to the Reuters news agency, signed "RAF" with the machine-gun red star, declaring the group dissolved:.

Almost 28 years ago, on 14 May , the RAF arose in a campaign of liberation. Today we end this project. The urban guerrilla in the shape of the RAF is now history.

On 7 May , pardon was denied; regular [e] parole was later granted on 24 November Police in Europe investigating the whereabouts of Ernst-Volker Staub, Burkhard Garweg and Daniela Klette stated that a search has been made in Spain, France and Italy [56] after initial reports suggested that they could be hiding in the Netherlands in after being suspected for masterminding robberies in supermarkets and cash transit vehicles in Wolfsburg , Bremen and Cremlingen between and The feature documentary Children of the Revolution tells Ulrike Meinhof's story from the perspective of her daughter, journalist and historian Bettina Röhl , while Andres Veiel 's feature film If Not Us, Who?

Welcome to the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, otherwise known as frequency illusion or recency illusion. This phenomenon occurs when the thing you've just noticed, experienced or been told about suddenly crops up constantly.

It gives you the feeling that out of nowhere, pretty much everyone and their cousin are talking about the subject -- or that it is swiftly surrounding you.

And you're not crazy; you are totally seeing it more. But the thing is, of course, that's because you're noticing it more [source: Zwicky ].

A couple of things happen when the Baader-Meinhof pronounced badder mainhoff phenomenon kicks in. One, your brain seems to be excited by the fact that you've learned something new, and selective attention occurs.

Your brain subconsciously thinks, "Hey, that's awesome! I'm going to look for that thing without actually thinking about it.

To make it all the more powerful, confirmation bias occurs after seeing it even once or twice. In other words, you start agreeing with yourself that, yup, you're definitely seeing it more [source: Pacific Standard ].

Now if you've done a cursory search for Baader-Meinhof, you might be a little confused, because the phenomenon isn't named for the linguist that researched it, or anything sensible like that.

Instead, it's named for a militant West German terrorist group, active in the s. The St.
